Bread machine taco bread is a little spicy, so we used it to make open-faced Sloppy Joes. Using taco seasoning mix for the spices makes it quick to put together.
A surprising thing about this recipe, surprising to me anyway, is that it contains wheat flour. The Man of the House doesn’t really like wheat flour, but he didn’t mind it in this recipe.
What’s all the stuff happening on the top of the loaf? It’s like the top of a kewpie doll! That was another surprise. It’s just the way the bread came out of the machine. Chances are that your loaf will look more “normal” than this.
Last, but not least, thanks to Donna Y. for her help with this recipe!!
Are you looking for another bread recipe that uses wheat flour? Then check out this applesauce bread recipe.
Just like taco bread, The Man of the House likes applesauce bread despite the fact that it contains wheat flour. The combination of bread flour, wheat flour, applesauce, raisins, sugar and cinnamon make for a delicious loaf of bread.
Making Bread Machine Taco Bread
This is a recipe for a two-pound bread machine. Use the wheat setting with medium crust for this recipe.
Follow the instructions that came with your bread machine in terms of which order to add ingredients to your bread machine. (With my Zojirushi Bread Machine I add the liquids first.)
Check on the dough after five or ten minutes of kneading. It should be a smooth, round ball.
If the dough is too dry add liquid a teaspoon at a time until it looks right. If it looks too wet, add flour a tablespoon at a time until it looks right.

Hi. Can this recipe be reduced down to a 1 pound loaf? And if so, could you please give me new measurements? My machine was gifted and I’m unsure if it will hold 2 pounds. There’s part of me that just wants to divide your recipe by two but that frightens me thank you.
Great question. Check out my article on converting recipes for differently sized machines. In short basically, you’ve got the right idea. 🙂
I cant wait to try out your bread recipes. I think I would add less Taco seasoning tho if its too strong. Would that be OK?I always use the dough cycle as I like to shape and bake in my oven. I just find it hard to knead with my arms anymore. I love your breads and rolls, etc. Please keep them coming.
I think adding less seasoning would be fine. That’s part of the fun of owning a bread machine. You can make the bread exactly the way you want it.
Taco bread sounds great with Sloppy Joe’s (DW makes the best SJ mix you’ll ever taste!) and would like to try making that! I’m making some Organic Sprouted Honey Cracked Wheat bread as I write this now, using my Pohl-Schmitt bread machine set on dough cycle. The hardest part was finding the “cracked wheat” which is nothing more than Bulgar, and Bob’s Red Mill came to my rescue with a small bag. Using 66.7 gms of Bulgar with 100 gms water, cooking the Bulgar for 3 mins makes it just the right consistency to bake in the bread. I use honey and EVOO to round out the flavors of this fast disappearing bread in my household. I also add 50 gms of Vital Wheat Gluten to the mix for a proper rise, and decent spring and crumb.
I love Bob’s Red Mill products!
I made a loaf with a Onion soup mix and omitted the salt because the mix has salt it was yummy!
I’ve done that too and loved it. Here’s my recipe for onion bread.
I just found your site today. I can’t wait to try the recipes. This Taco Bread sounds fantastic. Have you tried adding cheese too it? Thank you for all of the fantastic recipes.
I haven’t tried adding cheese, but that sounds really good. If you try this let me know how it turns out.
